Callen-Lenz Spotlight Series

Our Employee in the Spotlight series is a chance to highlight the impact our team members have on the success of Callen-Lenz. This week, we hear from Dr Kerri Mack, who joined as a Health & Safety Manager two months ago, reflecting on her role at Callen-Lenz and the challenges it brings.

Joining Callen-Lenz as the Health and Safety Manager two months ago has been an exciting challenge. Callen-Lenz is a market-leading UK SME specialising in innovative unmanned aviation solutions, from rapid prototyping to bespoke platforms and consultancy. The company’s fast-paced, growing environment brings unique health and safety challenges, which I am tackling with a clear focus: ensuring robust, practical practices that address major risks without unnecessary bureaucracy, allowing innovation to thrive.

Balancing proactive change with daily demands has been challenging but rewarding. By building trust early, I’ve been able to share my experience and implement a professional, systematic approach that enhances safety without disrupting the workplace culture. My role has been to integrate health and safety into the fabric of this dynamic organisation, ensuring it supports, rather than hinders, creativity and adaptability.

One of my first priorities was identifying and addressing key risks through a risk-based prioritisation system. This ensures efforts focus on high-impact areas like upgrading LEV systems and implementing tailored training. Using project management principles has helped streamline improvements while maintaining operational efficiency.

Critical to success has been engaging the workforce. By fostering open communication through team huddles and regular walkarounds, I’ve encouraged collaboration and ownership. Recognising contributions to safety improvements has further strengthened this engagement, helping embed a culture of shared responsibility.

I view health and safety as a continuous process—something we actively do rather than simply achieve. Framing safety as an enabler has begun to shift perspectives, with staff embracing it as a core element of productivity and growth. The early signs of this cultural shift are promising, with constructive discussions and enthusiasm for new initiatives becoming the norm.

Looking ahead, I am energised by the journey to build an even safer, more dynamic Callen-Lenz. Together, we can ensure safety remains integral to our innovation and success.
